March 19, 2007 HMC Partners met in an iConference to discuss when outsourcing at hospitals saves money and loses money, and whether monetary savings are the only consideration for outsourcing. Needham, MA March 19, 2007 -- HMC has conducted several analyses on the value of outsourcing and there are no conclusions that outsourcing always saves money or always costs more. Rather, it’s the intelligent use of outsourcing that improves hospital performance. Making an outsourcing decision solely based on cost is not likely to work well for hospitals.
Below is a summary of the analyses:
Reasons to Consider Outsourcing:
- Service is Not your Core Competency
- Trying Out New Technologies
- Lack of Internal Expertise
- Staffing Crunch
- Spread the Risk
Managing Outsourcing Intelligently:
- It’s Not All-or-Nothing
- Requires Oversight & Management
- Be Brutally Honest
