HMC Perspective on a Good Performer: Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital System

Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital System (SJMHS) is composed of 743 beds spanning three hospitals that serve the Ann Arbor, MI area. A member of Trinity Health, SJMHS enters into it’s fourth year of benchmarking with HMC as one of our strongest performers, in terms of both overall cost competitiveness and networking participation.

HMC’s FY 2005 Functional Cost Review™ data revealed that Analyzed Cost per Adjusted Admission decreased 6.5% across all three facilities since FY 2004 versus an average growth of 2.75% on this measure across all HMC Partner Hospitals for the same period. In addition to having an overall cost position trend moving in the right direction, the Functional Cost Review™ showed that cited savings opportunity for the three SJMHS facilities decreased by a total of $18.6M, which is a staggering 23% annual improvement from 2004 to 2005.

HMC has identified the following characteristics, all of which are demonstrated by Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital System, as key components of organizations that are successful at transforming goals into actionable results:
  1. A clearly defined financial gap, which provides the strategic initiative for a burning platform for change
  2. An unwavering commitment from the Senior Leadership Team to Performance Improvement work, which includes holding leaders across the organization accountable for change
  3. A deep, well-communicated, understanding of how benchmarking can be used most effectively to support the strategic initiatives of the organization. This approach includes evaluating some traditionally high cost areas, such as Marketing and Information Systems, in terms of ROI.
  4. The creation of Project Teams, where the cross-functional expertise of Team Leaders helped to break down barriers to change
  5. The courage to take on even the most challenging Performance Improvement tasks, such as evaluation of Benefits
  6. An encouragement from senior leadership, and an eager willingness of management, to engage in networking to stimulate thinking and generate ideas
  7. Clearly defined reporting and accountability loops to continually monitor performance along several strategic indicators
