St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Streamlined Preoperative Processes For Better Patient Outcomes, Fewer Surgery Cancellations, and $250,000 in 3 Months' Savings

St. Joseph Mercy Hospital shared with HMC KnoweldgeWeb Partners how redesigning the Surgical Prep Center process improved patient safety in preparing the patient for surgery.

Connie Burns, Service delivery leader Pre op/PACU/Surgical prep center, explains how St. Joseph Mercy Hospital achieved this success.
What challenge did you face or what process did you change?
Our Surgical Prep Center process had to be redesigned to make it more effective and to improve patient safety in preparing the patient for surgery.
Who was involved in the improvement/change process?
A design for six sigma approach was used and on the team was an Anesthesiologist, a clerk, the Nurse practioners, our costumers were represented by the office manager and scheduler of a large medical practice that used our center and myself.
What improvements occurred?
Education was changed to focus more on pre op teaching. Chart assemable was streamlined and an electrontic routing slip was developed that went to a special e mailbox to decrease lost routing slips and repeated call to the surgeons office.
What is the estimate of costs, FTE's, time, etc., saved?
St. Joseph Mercy Hospital had a 4.14/ month cancellation rate prior to the start of this project we now have a 1.6/month cancellation rate at this time and it continues to improve. We are looking at a savings of $486,000 savings by the completion of this project.
What will you do differently next time?
Learned to listen to the voice of our customer and to keep that in mind when making any process change. Also the six sigma approach makes it much easier to complete a project.
