Inova Fairfax names COO

Inova Fairfax Hospital recently announced that Patrick Christiansen is its new COO. In his role, he will have executive responsibility for operational procedures, and will join the collaborative team overseeing strategic decisions for both the hospital and the Inova Health System. Prior to this, Christiansen was a senior vice president of Inova Health.

According to the announcement, Christiansen joined Falls Church, Virginia-based Inova Fairfax in 2007 as administrator of the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute. While there, he established a highly successful cardiovascular program. He became senior vice president of the system in 2009.

Sentara to affiliate with RMH Healthcare

Norfolk, Va-based Sentara Healthcare recently announced it will affiliate with RMH Healthcare, based in Harrisonburg, Va. In a statement, Sentara claimed that RMH recognized the value of such an affiliation with another system, and had considered 10 top candidates.  “After extensive review, they chose Sentara. We share a not-for-profit mission and a culture of safety, quality and clinical excellence.”

According to a local press article,  Sentara officials will oversee  finances, although RMH will maintain  a local board to retain control of such matters as quality of care. The officials also claimed it will require about  six months to finalize the affiliation, which is probably going to occur early next year.

Inova Fairfax wins top hospital honor

Inova Fairfax Hospital recently announced U.S. News & World Report ranked it as 24th best facility for its gynecology department. This is the seventh consecutive year the facility has made it to the list in that particular specialty. The hospital also claimed that it was the 14th time in the past 15 years it achieved a national top hospital ranking.

Sentara heart national leader

U.S. News & World Report‘s 2010-11 has named Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Sentara Heart Hospital as offering some of  the United States’ best heart programs. In a recent announcement, Sentara claimed this was the 11th time it had been so recognized. The newspaper’s  rankings in the  heart and heart surgery category are based on death rates, patient safety, and other care factors, such as technology and patient services. Sentara also noted that it was listed as 43rd in the best hospitals category. Additionally, Sentara posts a mortality score that exceeded five of the top-ten-listed programs. Sentara stated it’s one of only two hospitals in Virginia ranked by U.S. News & World Report.

Inova takes national stroke treatment honor

The American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Stroke Association (ASA) have given Inova Fairfax Hospital the Gold Plus Award in the category of outstanding specialized stroke treatment.  Inova made the announcement earlier this month. To win the award, hospitals must have achieved a goal of treating stroke patients with 85 percent or higher compliance to core standard levels of care for 24 consecutive months.

Inova unveils $800 million expansion project

Inova Fairfax  CEO Knox Singleton recently discussed a five-year expansion that will cost more than $800 million. This exceeds a previously announced $621 million project, according to a recent article. As part of the project, Inova will renovate two existing hospital facilities, each costing $100 million.

Sentara to open regional orthopedics facility

HMC client Sentara Healthcare is wrapping up work on its new 18-bed, $22 million orthopedics facility, based in Hampton, Va. According to a recent article in the local press, this Orthopaedic Hospital at Sentara CarePlex will be  the only regional facility dedicated to orthopedics. The building is currently two stories, but can expand out to three should the need arise. After it opens on July 5, it will provide orthopedic services from pre-operative care and surgery to rehabilitation and home care services.

Inova Mount Vernon designated primary stroke center

The Joint Commission this month certified Inova Mount Vernon Hospital as a primary stroke center. It’s now one of an “elite” group of less than 20 centers in Virginia, Inova announced. Inova Alexandria, Inova Fairfax, and Inova Loudoun are already  primary stroke centers. The Joint Commission handles the accreditation and certification of over 17,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the U.S.

Sentara clocks sixth year without VAPs

Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center has just announced its sixth straight year without a single case of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP).  This hospital-acquired infection causes death and raises the  cost of care.  Additionally, three other Sentara hospitals have eliminated common hospital infections in their Intensive Care Units for one year or more.

Sentara engaged in robotic surgery study

The long term benefits of using robotic machines in prostate  surgery have yet to be proven, according to a new study conducted at the Sentara Health System/Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. According to Reuters,  for the study, researchers evaluated 785 men who underwent four types of treatment for prostate gland cancer. The procedures included both robot-assisted surgery and conventional open surgery, as well as the implanting of cancer cell- killing radioactive “seeds,” and cryotherapy.
